Aims, Vision and Plans

Here you will find out about the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust and how it is working to preserve and promote a great heritage in aviation science - an important educational resource and an internationally significant part of the nation's scientific progress. If you are interested in aviation history and what is being done to build on the heritage of the Farnborough site, there is material here to help you.

Follow the links on the left to find out more.

Background

Farnborough was originally a small town in England, south west of London with some fine mid-19th Century buildings and, importantly, close to open heath and to Aldershot, the home of the British army. It grew into the foremost location for British aviation research and development.

The connection with aviation spans most of the 20th Century and includes: Samuel Cody, Royal Engineers Balloon School, Royal Flying Corps, Royal Aircraft Factory, Lord Trenchard, RAF, Royal Aircraft Establishment, Fairey Delta supersonic world speed record, Skylark high altitude research rocket, Tornado, Concorde, the UK's largest wind tunnel, transonic and supersonic wind tunnels.  Research and development at Farnborough also made significant contributions to the fields of advanced materials and aviation medicine.

By far the most significant era was that of The Royal Aircraft Establishment - there are many who are proud to be associated with it and its achievements and form the backbone of the supporters of FAST.

FAST, FASH Limited and FAS Limited

"FAST" refers to the charitable trust established to preserve and promote the heritage of Farnborough.  A board of trustees runs FAST.  FAST is also a collections trust with a duty to conserve and display the collection given to it by the Ministry of Defence on the closure of the Farnborough site.

Farnborough Air Sciences Heritage Limited (FASHL) leases the FAST Museum building (Trenchard House) and its site from SEGRO plc and makes them available to FAST.

Farnborough Air Sciences Limited (FASL), which is now independent of FAST, previously had obligations to maintain the museum building and site. From April 1st 2007 it has no role or presence at the FAST Museum in Farnborough.
