Visit of Lady Whittle to FAST Museum
The widow of Sir Frank Whittle, inventor of the jet engine, visited the FAST museum during her recent tour of UK sites of special historic importance in the jet engine pioneering development work.
Lady Whittle was accompanied by her daughter Mrs Carla Clavelle and travelled from her home in Maryland, USA. Escorted by family friend Mr Roy Fowkes and Rushmoor Councillor Mr Charlie Fleming they visited Farnborough’s E28/39 replica at TAG Aviation’s airfield entrance on the Ively roundabout, followed by a visit to the FAST museum.
Welcomed on behalf of the Trustees by Maurice Shakespeare, Lady Whittle was briefed on the FAST project and then given a guided tour of the museum where she met with several FASTA volunteers including George Barton our engines expert and Ken Odgers our wind tunnels specialist. In her letter of thanks to FAST Lady Whittle was especially pleased to have been received in the Trenchard Room and to have stood by the full scale production example of the W2/700 engine held in the museums collection.

22nd April 2006: RNAY apprentices have a great day out
In
1949/50 the group of guys joined the MOD(N) to become Aircraft Fitter
Apprentices, committing themselves to a 5 year Apprenticeship.
They started in the Portsmouth Dockyard and
completed in
RNAY Fleetlands in Gosport Hants. On completion of
their
contract they were obliged to join one of the Armed Services to do
their National Service.
On completion of this commitment to their Country, this well trained and qualified group of lads migrated in many directions, some stayed at RNAY but many moved to other employment within MOD(N) and to outside industry. Now well past retirement age, this group keep in contact and have met on a regular basis over the last few years at various venues from Golf a Course to a Skittle Alley. This year they chose the FAST Museum in Farnborough, travelling from mainly the Portsmouth area but also other parts of the country in order to enjoy the company of their old friends for just a few hours.
